All in a name

Boston Globe: Call it genocide ``The air force of Sudan's National Islamic Front regime takes part in raids on villages. Then the Janjaweed ride in on horses, camels, and vehicles, killing men and boys, raping women and girls, burning hundreds of villages, stealing and killing livestock, and eradicating any sign that the lands of the non-Arab victims had been farmed. What is happening in Darfur is no less an instance of ethnic cleansing than what Serbs did to Bosnian Muslims or Saddam Hussein did to Iraqi Kurds and the marsh Arabs of southern Iraq.``

Torture the Terrorists

Torture approved:: ``The top U.S. military officer in Iraq approved letting officials at a Baghdad jail subject detainees to temperature extremes, reversed sleep patterns and diets of bread and water whenever they wished``.

These were the same tactics used at the U.S. detention center in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. After all, we knew they had to do it in Guantanamo otherwise they'd have brought the prisoners back here to the US, where their treatment could be overseen.

Soon, we'll be torturing animal rights and anti-war protesters in the name of ridding the world from terrorism.

We knew this was coming

``Bush administration said Tuesday that those activities qualify extreme animal-rights activists as terrorists, and Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch agreed.``

Luckily, not everyone is on the bandwagon. Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., the Judiciary committee's ranking Democrat, scoffed at that: "Most Americans would not consider the harassment of animal testing facilities to be 'terrorism' any more than they would consider anti-globalism protesters or anti-war protesters or women's health activists to be terrorists."

The right has really latched on to Animal Rights Terrorism, comparing it to ``groups such as the Ku Klux Klan and Aryan Nation.``

Of course they never mention pro-life terrorists who kill doctors. Because that's a war against abortion and that's OK.

Bush Legalizes Torture

We learned all about the process for doing something like this by watching the West Wing on TV. Get the White House council to state that something is legal, and then the president can do it. Or else, come up with loopholes so the president can get away with doing whatever he wants:

Leaked Whitehouse legal memo: ``the president was not necessarily bound by anti-torture laws or treaties because of his authority as commander in chief to protect national security.``

CNN: Did a government lawyer 'aid and abet' possible war crimes?

International Herald Tribune: U.S. memo freed Bush from bans on torture

Liberal or Conservative?

``If you want to take my guns away from me, and you're all for murdering fetuses, and love it when homosexuals marry each other, and want to give them kitchen appliances at their showers, and you're for the poor, you're a liberal.``

``If you are against those perversions and for the rich, you're a conservative.``

What could be simpler?
